Shah Jahan preferred to rule the Mughal Empire from Delhi. He founded the walled city of Shahjahanabad in 1638 which today is known as Old Delhi and also buit the Red Fort which became the main residence of the emperors of the Mughal dynasty for nearly 200 years, until 1856. The architectural elements of Red Fort are typical of Mughal building, reflecting a fusion of Persian, Timurid and Hindu traditions.
