In the Original Protection of Human Rights Act 1993, only Retired Chief Justice of India could be appointed as NHRC Chairperson. In 2019, an amendment was made to this and now a person who has been a Judge of the Supreme Court is also eligible to be appointed as Chairperson of the Commission in addition to a person who has been the Chief Justice of India.
