Vande Mataram literally means an ode to the mother. Vande Mataram was originally a poem. It was written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in his book Ananda Math (1881). Later the poem was composed as a song by Rabindranath Tagore. Vande Mataram was declared as a national song of India in the year 1947.
