Solution

The correct option is D Cornelius van Niel
Cornelius van Niel conducted studies on purple and green bacteria to demonstrate that photosynthesis is essentially a light-dependent reaction in which hydrogen from a suitable oxidizable compound and reduces carbondioxide to carbohydrates.

T.W. Engelmann was the first scientist to describe the action spectrum of photosynthesis. He used a prism to split light into its spectral components and then illuminate a green alga, Cladophora, to detect the sites of O2 evolution in the aerobic suspension. The region of blue and red light of the split spectrum was shown to be accumulating the maximum bacteria population.

Julius von Sachs was the first scientist to provide evidence of the production of glucose when a plant grows. He also told the world that the light-absorbing pigments of photosynthesis are located in chloroplasts.

In 1770, Joseph Priestley did experiments to claim that air plays a crucial role in the growth of a plant. Priestley hypothesized as follows - plants restore to the air whatever breathing animals and burning candles remove.
