Who Discovered Penicillin?

Open in App
Solution

Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin. Penicillin is an effective antibiotic obtained from Penicillium moulds and was first used to treat certain bacterial infections.

The antibiotic penicillin is from Penicillium notatum or P chrysogenum.

Following are the ways in which penicillin was made:

  1. The penicillium mold produced antibiotic penicillin naturally.
  2. These penicillin molds were grown in the deep fermentation tanks by adding sugar and other required ingredients. These ingredients increased the growth of the penicillin.
  3. Then the penicillin molecule was separated from the mold.
  4. The last step involved the purification of antibiotic medicine.
