Van Beneden in 1887 discovered that each species has a fixed number of chromosomes in their body. In this work he also discovered the process for production of haploid gametes.
While, Hertwig discovered the process of fertilization in the sea-urchin.
Winiwarter in 1912, reported that there are 47 chromosomes in spermatogonia and 48 in oogonia.
Boveri along with Sutton gave chromosome theory of genetics which identifies chromosomes as the carriers of genetic material.
