Realdo Columbo discovered that the heart's four valves permitted flow of blood in one direction only: from the right ventricle to the lungs, back to the left ventricle, and from there to the aorta. Realdo Columbo was lived in between 1515–1559 and on vivsection he confirmed the pulmonary circulation William Harvey was born on 1 April 1578.
