  1. Herophilus of Chalcedon was a Greek who lived in the 3 century BC. He was the first to person dissection of human cadavers.
  2. Autopsy: An autopsy is a surgical procedure which consists of a thorough examination of a corpse by dissection to determine the cause and manner of death or to evaluate any disease or injury that may be present for research or educational purposes.
  3. Autopsies are usually performed by a specialized medical doctor called a pathologist. In most cases, a medical examiner or coroner can determine cause of death and only a small portion of deaths require an autopsy.
  4. The main principal of autopsy is to determine the cause of death, the state of health of the person before he or she died, and if there where any medical diagnosis and treatment before death was appropriate.
