Arnold A. Berthold undertook the first endocrine experiments in 1849 when he castrated roosters and demonstrated androgen dependent changes in morphology and behavior (the comb atrophied, males became less aggressive and are less interested in hens). Berthold is widely recognized as the first experimenter in endocrinology. Berthold's interest in the internal secretion of glands was stimulated by Thomas Addison's monograph on the suprarenal glands.
