He discovered sulphur is an element, and diamond is a type of carbon. He co-authored the first modern system of chemical nomenclature and formulated the law of conservation of mass in chemistry. He invented the contemporary naming system for chemical compounds. Therefore, Lavoisier is known as the "Father of Modern Chemistry" because of his significant impact on the history of chemistry.​
