Father of Blue Revolution: – Dr Arun Krishnan and Dr Hirlal Chaudhuri. The concept of the rapid increase in the production of fish and marine products through package programmes is called as blue revolution. It was launched in India during the seventh Five-year plan (1985-1990).

Blue Revolution and Fisheries Sector in India

  • The Blue revolution focused on promoting and encouraging fishing among the economically backward sections of society.
  • Blue revolution improved the fisheries sector in India with the introduction of new techniques for breeding fish, exporting, marketing and rearing fish.
  • As per the restructured Plan Scheme on Blue Revolution, funding of Rs 3000 crores were approved by Central Government for a 5-year period from 2015-16 to 2019-20
  • India ranks third in fisheries production and second in aquaculture.
  • Fish production in India increased to 125.90 lakh tonnes in 2018–19 from 7.52 lakh tonnes in 1950–51.
  • National Fish Farmers day is celebrated in India on 10th July.
  • The largest fishing harbour in Asia is Koyilandy harbour located in Kerala, India.
