Tissue Culture:

  1. Tissue culture is an artificial biological technique which involves in vitro cultivation of plant cells, tissues or organs under the controlled condition on a nutrient culture medium of the known composition.

Father of tissue culture:

  1. Gottlieb Haberlandt is known as the father of plant tissue culture.
  2. He was an German botanist, who was the first to separate and culture the plant cells on knop's salt solution.
  3. He pointed out for the first time that plants cells are totipotent, which led to establishment of plant tissue culture.
  4. He was the first to point out the the possibilities of the culture of isolated tissues and the cultured cells forms callus.
  5. The plant developed by the tissue culture are cloned and grown and maintained by the process of micropropagation.
