Question

Who is the second messenger for hormone mediation?

Open in App
Solution

Second messenger:

It is an intracellular secondary messenger that is derived from ATP by the action of adenyl cyclase enzyme. It functions as a second chemical messenger in many hormones controlled biochemical and molecular processes.

Explanation :

  1. It is degraded by cAMP phosphodiesterase to from 5'AMP. Several hormones exert effects on cells by causing the formation of a substance first – cyclic, 3′ – 5′ adenosine monophosphate in cells.
  2. The cyclic AMP is frequently referred to as the second messenger for hormone mediation. Cyclic AMP is an adenosine 1-5 monophosphate.

Effects of Second messenger: Upon formation, the cyclic AMP induces hormonal effects in the cells. Consequently, cyclic AMP serves as an intracellular hormonal mediator. In other instances, it is also known as the second messenger for hormone mediation. The first messenger is the original hormone itself.
