Question 22
Who made the famous statement 'Cells arise from pre-existing cells'?
(a) Haeckel
(b) Virchow
(c) Hooke
(d) Schleiden
(b) Virchow
Three German scientists, Mattias Schleiden, Theodor Schwann, and Rudolf Virchow were instrumental in developing what we call the cell theory. Rudolf Virchow added the 3rd part to the cell theory- 'Cells arise from pre-existing cells'.
With this statement accepted by the scientists, the cell theory came to have 3 postulates :
1.All known living things are made up of one or more cells.
2.The cell is the fundamental unit of structure and function in all living organisms.
3.All living cells arise from pre-existing cells by division.
