The modern theory of the origin of life was proposed by Russian biochemist AI Oparin and supported by a biologist JBD Haldane. This theory is also known as the Abiogenic theory or Naturalistic theory. According to this theory, life originated on Earth after a long period of 'abiogenic molecular evolution'. Origin of life on Earth took place as a result of physiochemical changes that brought about a gradual evolution of inorganic and organic compounds called chemical evolution and thereafter biological evolution. This theory was supported experimentally by Miller and Urey and Sydney W Fox. They found that if a dry mixture of amino acids is heated, polypeptide molecules are synthesised. In the same way, polysaccharides can be synthesised by simple sugars and fats by fatty acids and glycerol.
