Question

Who suggested the distribution of electrons into different shells? How are the electrons distributed across these shells?

Solution

The distribution of electrons across the energy shells was suggested by Bohr and Bury.

According to the Bohr-Bury scheme, the electrons are distributed across the shells according to the following rules:
(i) The maximum no. of electrons which any shell can accomodate is given by 2n2 where n is the number of shell ( n for K = 1, for L =2, etc.)
(ii) The maximum number of electrons which can be accomodated in the outermost shell is 8.
(iii) Electrons are not accomodated in a given shell unless the inner shells get filled to their capacity first.
