  1. A horsepower is a unit of power.
  2. Power can be defined as the time rate of change of work done.
  3. Before the invention of the steam engine, horses were primarily used to pull and transport heavy loads.
  4. When steam engines were introduced, in order to quantify the power of the engine, it was calculated to what the equivalent number of horses needed for the same power was.
  5. This is where the term ‘horsepower’ originated. This term was invented by James Watt.
