Annie Besant was a British socialist, theosophist, women's rights activist, writer, orator, educationist, and philanthropist. Annie Besant first visited India in 1893 and later settled there, becoming involved in the Indian nationalist movement. Annie Besant's long-time interest in education resulted in the founding of the Central Hindu College at Benares (1898). She was involved in Indian freedom movement. In 1916, she founded Home Rule League which advocated self-rule by Indians.
