When the British were ruling India, they realised that they could assert more power if they clearly understood the geographical features of the land. So, they conducted various surveys of it to prepare maps. These topographical maps were first made for the British army under the directions of Major General Roy in 1765. Earlier, these maps were called ordnance maps because of their military purpose. Then, in 1767, the British established the Survey of India. Major James Rennell was appointed as the first Surveyor General of India.
