After the Rowlatt Act was passed by the British, Gandhi called in a nationwide anti-Rowlatt Satyagraha on 6th April, 1919. Despite Gandhi’s best efforts to keep this protest non violent, it turned really intense in Lahore and Amritsar. Gandhi was arrested and denied entry to Punjab. Following this, the local leaders of Amritsar, Dr. Saifuddin Kitchlew and Dr. Satyapal, were also arrested.
