Question

Whose pH increases by greater value on dilution from:
  • CH3COOH solution
  • HCl solution

Open in App
Solution

In dilution an acid reduces concentration of H+ as a result pH will increase. HCl dissociates completely in water and thus gives more H+ ions whereas acetic acid dissociates partially in water and thus gives less H+ ions. Therefore HCl solution gives higher pH on dilution as decrease of H+ concentration is higher than that of decrease of H+ concentration for CH3COOH.
