Question

Whose rotation speed is faster , the Earth or the Moon

Open in App
Solution

The moon orbits the Earth once every 27.322 days. It also takes approximately 27 days for the moon to rotate once on its axis. As a result, the moon does not seem to be spinning but appears to observers from Earth to be keeping almost perfectly still.

The Moon orbits Earth at a speed of 2,288 miles per hour (3,683 kilometers per hour). During this time it travels a distance of 1,423,000 miles (2,290,000 kilometers).

The Earth's orbital speed around the Sun: 30 km/s (108,000 km/h, ~70,000 mph).

Since the Earth spins faster than the Moon moves around it, the tidal bulges are dragged along with the Earth's surface faster than the Moon moves, and move "in front of the Moon".
Because of this, the Earth's gravitational pull on the Moon has a component in the Moon's "forward" direction with respect to its orbit.
