Question

Why a diamagnetic substance is repelled by both the poles of the magnet and not repelled by north and attracted by south ?

Open in App
Solution

When a diamagnetic substance is placed in the magnetic field of a magnet, the diamagnetic substance develops similar pole of the magnetic pole nearbyand thus the magnetic poles repel the diamagnetic substance. In the magnetic field of magnet there is is weak repulsion of diamagnetic substance. This is because by bringing a magnet near the diamagnetic substance, the substance develops weak dipole in the reverse direction of the magnetic field of the magnet.
