Question

Why a distant lightning flash is seen before the thunder is heard?

Open in App
Solution

1-Speed of light (c=3×108m/s) is more than the speed of sound (c=330m/s) which means light travels faster than sound.

2- Hence light takes less time to travel the same distance as compared to sound.

Thus, a flash of lightning is seen before the thunder is heard even when both the events occur simultaneously during the thunderstorm.
