Why air is considered as a mixture and not a compound?

Open in App
Solution

Air is considered a mixture because of the different reasons:

  • A mixture is a substance made up of two or more substances that are mostly immiscible with each other.
  • Air can be separated into its constituents like nitrogen, oxygen, etc, by the physical process of fractional distillation. That's why Air is considered a mixture.
  • Whereas, Compound is something that consists of two or more things or substances combined together chemically in a definite ratio.
