Question

Why an aquatic animals are more comfortable in cold water in comparison to the hot water

Open in App
Solution

According to Henry's Law,

p =Kh * χ

Where Kh = Henry's law constant.

Solubility is indirectly proportional to Henry's constant.

As temperature increases, Kh increases, hence, solubility decreases.

Therefore, at higher temperature, value of Kh is high, so, solubility is low. So, it is difficult for aquatic species to breathe dissolved oxygen.

This question can have multiple answers, but this answer can be acceptable for high school level.

Alternate answer :

The amount of dissolved oxygen in water decreases with rise in the water's temperature. Cold water has more dissolved oxygen per unit area than warm water. This the reason why aquatic animals are more comfortable in cold water than warm water.
