Question

Why are aldehydes and ketones polar compounds?

Open in App
Solution

Both aldehydes (RCHO) and ketones(RCOR) contain a C=O bond. Oxygen is more electronegative than carbon draws the electron density towards it which creates a slight positive charge over the less electronegative carbon atom and negative charge over the more electronegative oxygen atom. This creates a net dipole moment pointing from carbon towards oxygen and thus makes the compound polar.
