Question

Why are antibiotics not effective against viral diseases?

Open in App
Solution

Antibiotics :

The chemicals that kill or stop the growth of disease cause microbes such as bacteria, fungi, and certain parasites.

  1. Antibiotics especially work against disease-causing bacteria, they are not effective against viruses because they do not have their metabolic system so they depend on the host for their metabolic activities.
  2. Antibiotics are obtained by bacteria and fungi that treat bacterial infections, but not viral infections because the viruses use their host cells to perform their metabolic activities, so they cannot kill viruses. Thus, antibiotics are not effective for viral diseases.
