Question

Why are cells generally of small size?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Cells have a minute size because they can maximize their ratio of the surface area to volume.
  2. Say for example, the cells tends to increase its volume by doubling its contents.
  3. But after a point of time it either has to divide or else it shall break.
  4. So, the smaller cells have a higher ratio which allows more molecules and ions to move across the cell membrane per unit cytoplasmic volume.
