Question

Why are CFCs banned?

Open in App
Solution

CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) were banned because:

  • Oxygen depleting substances (ODS) like chlorofluorocarbons, nitrogen oxides, chlorine, carbon tetrachloride, etc. convert ozone to oxygen.
  • As a result, the high radiation ultraviolet (UV) rays will be in a position to pass through the ozone layer and will have direct access to our planet.
  • The ultraviolet rays will lead to health hazards.
