Question

Why are cutting instruments sharpened? Explain.

Open in App
Solution

The pressure exerted on a given surface depends upon the following factors:

  1. Pressure is directly proportional to the force applied on a surface.
  2. Pressure is inversely proportional to the area of cross-section of a surface.

Hence, all the cutting instruments such as knives, blades, etc. are sharpened from the cutting edge. As the cutting edge is sharpened, the area of cross-section decreases, and pressure exerted by them increases. Thus, they can easily penetrate a given surface.
