Question

Why are decomposition reactions called the opposite of combination reactions? Write an equation for these reactions.

Open in App
Solution

In a decomposition reaction, a single compound breaks down to produce two or more simpler substances.
For example: CaCO3(s)CaO(s)+CO2(g)
While, in a combination reaction, two or more substances simply combine to form a new substance.
For example: CaO(s)+CO2(g)CaCO3(s)
Hence, they are opposite to each other.
