Question

why are electrovalent compounds are generally soluble in water but insoluble in solvents like petrol, kerosene?

Solution

Electrovalent compounds are not soluble in organic solvents, as these solvents do not contain ions which can interact with ions of the electrovalent compounds and thus dissolve them. As we know that like dissolves like, therefore electrovalent compounds will be soluble in inorganic solvents like water which contains ions.
