Question

Why are equipotential lines parallel to the surface of a conductor?

Open in App
Solution

Conductors:

  1. The electric field is perpendicular to the surface in conductors.
  2. No field exists within the conductors.
  3. As a result, near the surface, equipotential lines are formed.
  4. Hence, they are parallel to the surface of the conductor as they are perpendicular to the field lines.
