Question

Why are gram-negative bacteria usually pathogens?

Open in App
Solution

Gram-negative bacteria:

  1. In gram-negative bacteria, the peptidoglycan layer is much thinner than that of gram-positive bacilli.
  2. Gram-negative bacteria are therefore harder to kill because of their harder cell wall.
  3. When their cell wall gets disturbed, the gram-negative bacteria starts releasing endotoxins which could cause problem in already persistent disease making it worsen the condition.
