Why are hemophilia and color blindness found more in males than in females?

Open in App
Solution

Hemophilia

It is a sex-linked recessive disorder that affects the blood’s ability to clot causing perpetual internal or external loss of blood.

Colour blindness

It is a sex-linked recessive disorder that is characterized by the inability to differentiate between red and green color.

Reason for the occurrence of this disorder more in males than females:

  1. Both males (XY) and females have the X chromosome (XX).
  2. Males have only one X chromosome (XY).
  3. The recessive allele on the X chromosome of males is not masked.
  4. If a male inherits a recessive allele, he suffers from the disease.
  5. If a recessive allele is present in females, the dominant allele may mask it.
