Why are herbivores considered similar to predators in the ecological context? Explain.

Solution

Herbivores feed on plants. They are considered as predators because they also transfer energy across the trophic levels. Besides this, they also keep the population of their prey under control. For example, when the prickly pear cactus was introduced in Australia in early 1920, they spread rapidly causing havoc.Their population was controlled by introducing cactus-feeding predator (a moth).
