Question

Why are Hydrogen engines a bad idea?

Open in App
Solution

  1. A good source of fuel would be one that gives a large amount of work per unit volume or mass.
  2. It should be easily available, stored, and transported from one place to another.
  3. The ignition temperature of such fuels is not much high or low and must be eco-friendly with nature.
  4. Examples of some conventional sources of energy are fossil fuels, nuclear energy, hydropower plants, thermal power plants, etc.
  5. Hydrogen is a very lightweight fuel at room temperature and pressure, which makes it very difficult to compress.
  6. Hydrogen gas is much reactive so when it comes in contact with air it forms explosives that further can not be easily controlled.
  7. It must be compressed at higher pressure which creates difficulty in the storage of this gas.
  8. The transportation of hydrogen gas is also difficult because it can not be stored easily.
  9. Hydrogen is not eco-friendly and has high calorific value, therefore it can work efficiently as fuels.
  10. Hence Hydrogen engines are a bad idea.
