Question

Why are ionic bonds the weakest?

Open in App
Solution

  1. The chemical bonds are formed to attain the noble gas configuration by completing the valence shell of electrons.
  2. Ionic bonds are formed by the complete transfer of electrons.
  3. First the ions are formed by the loss or gain of electrons, so the loss of electron form cations whereas the gaining of electrons forms a anion.
  4. The bonds are held together by a strong nuclear force called the electrostatic force of attraction.
  5. The ionic bonds are thus not weaker types of bonds.
  6. These are generally strong and hard types of bonds.
  7. Example: Sodium loses one of its electrons to become stable and Chlorine attains those electrons to become stable and so an ionic bond is formed.
