Question

Why are ionic chemicals water-soluble but kerosene insoluble?

Open in App
Solution

Ionic Compound:

  • Ionic compounds are chemical compounds that are bound together by ionic bonding.
  • Ions of opposite charges are neatly packed together to create crystalline solids.
  • Metals react with non-metals to generate ionic compounds.

Insoluble in kerosene but soluble in water:

  • Ionic chemicals dissolve readily in any liquid capable of dissolving their ionic bond.
  • Water has a stronger ionic binding and is polar in nature, it destroys the ionic bond by hydrogen bonding.
  • Many other solvents, like kerosene and petrol, are unable to disrupt the ionic bond.
  • Kerosene is a nonpolar organic solvent that can only dissolve nonpolar covalent molecules.
