  1. The whole leaves or part of leaves gets modified to perform special functions like climbing, attachment to the substrate, storage, protection, etc.
  2. The leaves get modified into another form so as to perform some special functions other than the normal ones,

Examples of leaf modifications:

1. Tendrils:

  • These are slender, wiry and coiled structures that perform the function of climbing.
  • Example: Sweet pea, grapes, etc.

2. Spines:

  • These are pointed structures that play a role in the protection of the plant against herbivores.
  • Example: Pineapple, opuntia, etc.
