Leguminous plants possess root nodules where atmospheric nitrogen is fixed by symbiotic bacteria- Rhizobium. The fixed nitrogen fertilizers the soil. Moreover, the green plants provide manure by their death and decay. So, leguminous plants are cultivated as green manure crops.
