Question

Why are lubricants (oil or grease) applied to rubbing surfaces of machines?

Open in App
Solution

Machine parts aree generally lubricated in order to reduce friction. Friction mostly occurs due to the roughness of the surface. If the surfaces are smoothed out through polishing or lubrication then the interlocking between the two surfaces gets decreased by a whole lot. Due to the reduced friction the machines run smoothly.
