Lysosomes are ultrastructural particles of the cell containing hydrolytic enzymes responsible for digestion of intracellular and extracellular particles. The primary lysosomes secrete hydrolases outside by exocytosis, resulting in degradation of the extracellular material. The cell damage or rupturing of lysosome may cause the release of lytic enzymes that bring about digestion of cell's own material, the process is known as autophagy. Thus, lysosomes are sometimes called 'suicidal bags'.
