Question

Why are metals electropositive in nature?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Metals donate their electrons to stabilize themselves.
  2. The outer shell or valence shell of metals contains 1to3 electrons.
  3. The tendency of losing an electron will form a cation or attains a positive charge on it.
  4. They lose the valence shell electrons more easily because the outer shell electrons are loosely bonded.
  5. Metals are good conductors of electricity and heat.
  6. Hence by donation of electrons metals are termed electropositive in nature.
  7. Example: SodiumNa, PotassiumK, LithiumLi are metals.
