why are metals placed to the left, non metals to the right and metalloids in the center of the modern periodic table?

The periodic table was arranged according to the increasing atomic number. The properties of the elements repeat them after a interval of 7 elements. The first element of each period that has a tendency to lose electrons. As a result the elements having same properties ended up being on one side of the table. Metals on the left, non metals on the extreme right and metalloids in between.
