Why are nephrons also called uriniferous tubules?

Open in App
Solution

Nephrons:

  1. Nephrons are highly-coiled tube-like structures that are known as the structural and functional units of the kidney.
  2. The two parts of nephrons are listed below:
  1. Malpighian body - Bowman's capsule and glomerulus.
  2. Renal tubules - proximal convoluted tubule (PCT), distal convoluted tubule (DCT), and Henle's loop.

Uriniferous tubules:

  1. The neurons play an eminent role in the filtration of blood and the formation of urine.
  2. The process by which the urine is produced by the nephrons is known as uropoiesis.
  3. Hence, the nephrons are also called uriniferous tubules.

The nephrons are called uriniferous tubules as they are the site of urine formation.
