Question

Why are noble gases also called inert gases?

Open in App
Solution

  • In the periodic table, elements of the zero group are commonly called noble gases.
  • Noble gases are present at 0.9% of air by volume.
  • Helium(He),Neon(Ne),Argon(Ar),Krypton(Kr),Xenon(Xe),andRadon(Rn) are the six noble gases.
  • Atoms of these elements, all the electronic shells including the outermost shell, are completely filled.
  • So their electronic configuration is already stable, hence they do not lose or gain electrons. Due to this reason, they do not take part in the chemical reaction. Hence they are called as inert gases.
