Question

Why are nutrient cycles in nature called biogeochemical cycles?

Open in App
Solution

Nutrient cycling:

During nutrient cycling, the nutrients pass from various components of the ecosystem like the biotic organisms (living systems) and the abiotic components (rock, soil, and air).

Biogeochemical cycle:

The term biogeochemical cycle denotes that the nutrients like carbon, hydrogen, phosphorus, etc. move through the biological systems and the geological systems (abiotic components). Hence, nutrient cycling is called the biogeochemical cycle.
