Why are peptides important?

Open in App
Solution

Peptides:

  • They are naturally occurring short chains of amino acids (2-50 amino acids).
  • Amino acids are connected via amide bonds.
  • They include hormones, antibiotics, etc.
  • They are formed by the transcription of genetic codes(DNA sequence).
  • Also, larger proteins break down to form peptides.
  • Example- milk peptides are formed by the digestion of Casein protein.
  • Polypeptides fold to produce functionally active proteins.

Importance of peptides:

  • Peptide hormones help in blood sugar regulation. Example- insulin, glucagon, etc.
  • Examples of peptide antibiotics- colistin, actinomycin, etc.
  • Some peptides are important components of proteins required by the skin.
  • Example- Collagen, elastin, etc.
  • Also, peptide-containing serums are used for younger-looking skin.
